Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Domestic violence is a pervasive societal issue that affects individuals, families, and communities. In Sokoto North Local Government, Sokoto State, domestic violence has been identified as a significant problem, manifesting in physical, emotional, and psychological abuse, often exacerbated by socio-cultural norms and economic challenges. Newspapers, as a form of print media, play a vital role in raising awareness, advocating for victims, and promoting societal change through campaigns and investigative reporting. By highlighting the prevalence and consequences of domestic violence, newspapers inform policymakers and the public, fostering dialogue and action against the issue (Aliyu & Ibrahim, 2023). This study examines the effectiveness of newspaper campaigns in combating domestic violence in Sokoto North, focusing on public perception, campaign strategies, and the outcomes of media advocacy efforts.
